It is my great pleasure to announce the appointment of Michael Ryder CMG as the new Secretary of the RSAA effective immediately.  Michael joins us after a distinguished career in the FCO.

Michael read History at Cambridge, graduating with a First, and started his career as an academic with appointments at Cambridge University, Johns Hopkins University and Osaka Gakuin University. He joined the FCO in 1984 holding a range of positions in his early career dealing with the Soviet Union, East-West relations, European defence, the first Gulf War, EU Common Foreign and Security Policy and the former Yugoslavia.  More recently, his career highlights have included appointments as UK Special Representative for Sudan and South Sudan, UK Special Envoy to Mali, UK Senior Civilian Representative, Helmand Province Afghanistan, Deputy Ambassador Kabul, Deputy Secretary, Butler Inquiry and Head of the FCO Inquiry Team, Hutton Inquiry, UK Special Representative for International Drugs Issues.  Michael is currently the UK’s Special Representative for Deportations with Assurances to which he was appointed jointly by the then Home and Foreign Secretaries in 2015.

Please join me in welcoming Michael and wishing him well in his new role.  I am very pleased that we have been able to attract someone of Michael’s undoubted calibre and experience to help lead the Society into an exciting new phase of its development.
