States and non-States: The Levant in turmoil
This meeting of the Society’s Asian Dinner Club (Dinner Club Members and their guests only) will be addressed by Sir John Jenkins KCMG LVO, on ‘States and non-States: The Levant in turmoil’.
Before retiring in January 2015, Sir John held a series of senior posts as a diplomat including as UK Ambassador to Burma 1999–2002; Consul-General in Jerusalem 2003–06; UK Ambassador to Syria 2006–07; Director, Middle East and North Africa at the FCO 2007–09; UK Ambassador to Iraq 2009–11; UK Special Representative to the national Transitional Council of Libya May–October 2011, briefly UK Ambassador to Libya October–November 2011 and lastly as UK Ambassador to Saudi Arabia from June 2012 until his retirement. In January 2015 he became Executive Director of The International Institute for Strategic Studies – Middle East, based in Bahrain.

Lecture starts at 1.15pm and ends around 2.30pm. A sandwich lunch is available from 12.30pm and must be booked via the office by 2.30pm the day before.
