New Beginnings: Historical Events in China & British Malaya in the mid-1800s following the Opium Wars
Ms. Chan Ling Yap will talk on the historical events in China and British Malaya that inspired her latest novel, New Beginnings. The novel is set in the mid-1800s, a period in which hundreds of thousands of Chinese fled China as the country reeled from the impact of the Opium Wars and from the corruption of the Qing Dynasty. While China fell, Britain’s empire expanded, spearheaded by the might of the East India Company. The expansion was to include the acquisition of Malaya, one of its most profitable colonies.
