Dr Jim Hoare recognised with OBE

We congratulate Dr Jim Hoare on being awarded an OBE in the 2025 New Year’s Honours list. Jim has been a long-standing member and supporter of the RSAA, serving as a member of its Editorial Board for many years. He is one of the UK’s foremost authorities on Korea, and on North Korea in particular.

Jim opened the UK’s first embassy in Pyong Yang in 2000 as Chargé d’affaires on the establishment of diplomatic relations that year. He was previously the head of the North Asia and Pacific Research Group in the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He has published extensively on Korea, Japan, China and the wider region and has held positions at SOAS and at Chatham House.
