Kazakhstan, Six Months On

Joanna Lillis

In January this year, Kazakhstan underwent a brief but violent period of major upheaval, creating uncertainty about the country’s power structures and leaving many dead. Events in Ukraine have since driven Kazakhstan out of the headlines but many questions remain about the country’s future course and the aims of President Tokayev.

Joanna Lillis (@joannalillis) is a Kazakhstan-based journalist reporting on Central Asia whose work has featured in the Guardian, The Economist and the Independent.  She is the author of Dark Shadows: Inside the Secret World of Kazakhstan. She was a panelist in the RSAA’s discussion of Kazakhstan on 14 January 2022 chaired by Professor Peter Frankopan. (You can see the recording of that event here.)
